Industrial Parts Cleaning: Alkaline vs Solvent vs Aqueous Cleaners

Surface cleanliness before coating, plating, welding, or bonding is critical for adhesion. Residual oils, fingerprints, and forming lubricants all compromise downstream quality.

Alkaline Aqueous Cleaners

Alkaline cleaners saponify and emulsify mineral oils and fatty soils — the dominant chemistry in industrial parts washing.

Builder components:

  • Sodium hydroxide (pH 12–14): Aggressive saponification; for heavy-duty steel cleaning only
  • Sodium carbonate/metasilicate (pH 10–12): General purpose; safe for aluminium
  • STPP: Sequestrant + builder; phosphate restrictions apply in many markets

Surfactant package:

  • Non-ionic (alcohol ethoxylates): Low foaming; preferred for spray and ultrasonic systems
  • Glucoside surfactants: Biodegradable; suitable for closed-loop recycling

Typical application: 2–5% concentrate, 50–80°C, 5–15 min soak or spray.
