Scale Inhibitors for Industrial Cooling Towers
Scale Inhibitors for Industrial Cooling Towers
Cooling tower water concentrates through evaporation, raising dissolved salt concentrations. Without chemical treatment, CaCO3 scale deposits reduce heat transfer coefficient by up to 50% and increase energy costs by 10–30%.
Phosphonate Inhibitors
Phosphonates (HEDP, ATMP, PBTC) inhibit scale by adsorbing onto crystal nuclei and distorting crystal growth (threshold effect), effective at sub-stoichiometric doses (1–10 mg/L). PBTC offers superior hydrolytic and thermal stability at high temperatures and low pH.
Polyacrylate Dispersants
Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and maleic acid copolymers disperse suspended CaCO3 particles. Used alongside phosphonates, not as replacements. Typical dose: 5–20 mg/L.
Green (Phosphorus-Free) Inhibitors
- PESA (polyepoxysuccinic acid): Biodegradable; effective for CaCO3 at pH 7–9
- PASP (polyaspartic acid): Amino acid polymer; Green Chemistry Award winner
- Sodium gluconate: Cost-effective for moderate hardness; excellent iron dispersant
