Methanol Carbon Source for Denitrification

Technical grade methanol (CH3OH) is the most widely used external carbon source for biological denitrification in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. Denitrifying bacteria utilize methanol as an electron donor to reduce nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) to nitrogen gas (N2), achieving effluent total nitrogen (TN) targets. Methanol offers high C:N efficiency and rapid bacterial uptake compared to alternative carbon sources.
